She was married at a very tender age of 12, into a household that looked at her only as a maid. She was physically abused by her in-laws, and when her father realized this he rescued her and brought her back home. Her teenage life was tumultuous, she had attempted suicide and it was her close encounters with death that changed her.
It was then that she realized that life is full of challenges, and she took a personal oath to be prepared to face them.
By then she had realised the limited scope of growth in the villages and the dismal life amongst small minded people. At the age of 15, she moved to Mumbai; all alone in such a huge metro city she learned to live independently.
Meet Ms. Kalpana Saroj, an entrepreneur born in a Dalit family in Roperkheda village. The chairperson of Kamani tubes, she owns a net worth of USD 112 mn. Often called the original “Slumdog Millionaire”, she bought the distressed assets of Kamani Tubes Company and successfully steered the company back to profits.
She started KS Film Production and produced her first movie in three languages. She build a successful real estate business and she was on board of Kamani tubes.
She was awarded the Padma Shri for Trade and Industry in 2013 and was appointed to the board of directors of Bhartiya Mahila Bank, a bank primarily for women, by the Government of India.
She is a living inspiration for millions of women all over the country who have forgotten their self-belief and power; who continue to live a life of mediocrity.
